About us

Palazzo Costanzo was built in the 17th century by Giovanni Battista Costanzo, a member of a noble family from the Kingdom of Naples that settled in Malta early that century. In 1666–67, Tommaso Costanzo became the first family member to serve as a judge in Mdina’s Università. His grandson Ignazio was created Duke of Paganica by King Charles III in 1758. Over the centuries, the Palazzo passed through prominent Maltese families, including the De Piro and Apap families, and welcomed many distinguished guests. It is also believed to have sheltered supporters of Garibaldi and members of the Carbonari secret society. During WWII, the Palazzo was leased to the RAF as an officers’ mess and later became a convent school for girls. Subsequently converted into a restaurant, Palazzo Costanzo retains its Baroque character, vaulted chambers and the atmosphere of a traditional Maltese gentleman’s home. It is protected as a Grade 1 monument.
